Luke Cage Went to Latveria for His Money

Doctor Doom owed Luke Cage $200. Luke crossed an ocean to make sure the bill did not become a suggestion.

The story unfolds across Hero for Hire #8–9 from 1973. Doom secretly hires Cage through a middleman to deal with rogue robots, then leaves without paying.

Cage discovers who hired him, reaches Latveria and confronts one of Marvel’s most powerful villains—not to save reality, but to collect the wage he earned.

Why it survives

The conflict is painfully human: respect for labor. Doom sees $200 as beneath him. Cage sees refusing payment as an insult to every risk he took.

Correction: the setup begins in #8; the famous Latverian confrontation and payoff finish in #9.
