OLD MAN OTAKU / INDEPENDENT CREATORS

BookLife Opens Its Illustrated Prize to Indie Comics. Read the AI Rules Before Entering.

The competition offers a $5,000 overall grand prize and a December 15 deadline. Its AI policy and conflicting category-prize wording deserve a closer look.

Independent comic creators have a new competition to consider: BookLife and Publishers Weekly’s Illustrated Contest includes a dedicated Comics & Graphic Novels category.

The contest launched October 1, with submissions open through December 15, 2026. The standard entry fee is $119 and is nonrefundable. The overall Illustrated Contest grand prize is $5,000—not a separate guaranteed $5,000 award for the comics category.

Entrants receive a Critic’s Report from a Publishers Weekly reviewer. BookLife’s FAQ distinguishes that assessment from a Publishers Weekly book review, so creators should credit it correctly when using it in promotion.

AI-assisted and AI-generated are different under these rules

The contest rules exclude AI-generated works. But BookLife does publish a distinction between generated and assisted material.

Its AI policy describes generated content as text or images originating with an AI tool. Assisted material begins with human-created work that AI subsequently refines or modifies, with examples including proofreading and image editing. The Prize FAQ says selecting “AI Assisted” does not itself influence evaluation.

That does not make every production workflow eligible. A creator writing prompts for AI-generated interior artwork should not assume that direction alone places the images in BookLife’s assisted category. The policy also lists specific exceptions; creators with mixed workflows should ask the organizers how the contest rules apply before paying.

One prize detail still needs clarification

BookLife’s launch page advertises $1,000 category prizes. However, its detailed Illustrated Contest rules say there are no additional cash awards beyond the grand prize. The FAQ separately describes a $1,000 marketing-services package for finalists. Those statements should not be combined into a promise of category cash.

RogueVerse analysis: The useful question is whether the feedback and potential exposure justify the entry cost for your project. Winning would be welcome. It should not be the budget plan.

Before submitting, check the English-language and publication-status requirements, confirm that your work fits the book category, and resolve any uncertainty about AI use or awards directly with BookLife. The Illustrated Contest has no word-count requirement, but that does not mean every ongoing webcomic automatically qualifies.
